Brazilian voter authority (TSE) has made it public that they are studying blockchain technology to aid in the organisation’s task of organizing elections. Celio Castro Wermerlinger, coordinator of modernization of the institution, stated that this decentralized ledger tech was included in a research program called “Elections of the Future.”
Brazilian TSE Is Researching Blockchain Tech
Many solutions that use blockchain tech are being developed for different applications. Brazilian authorities announced that last month they are researching how blockchain technology might be used in voting.
Celio Castro Wermerlinger is coordinator for modernization at Brazil’s voting authority. He stated that the technology being investigated included end-to-end voter protocol, cryptography post-quantum, shared keys and blockchain. This investigation is part of a program called “Elections of the Future,” that seeks more efficient and more economically viable solutions to be implemented in the electronic voting system.
Wermerlinger, however, did not provide any timeline and claimed that the Brazilian system of voting, now at 100%, is secure due to electronic solutions.
Blockchain and Voting
Voting is one possible application of blockchain systems, due to its trust and security, but it hasn’t been widely accepted, aside from pilot testing in the U.S. and other events.
Voatz, which is blockchain-based, has been helping West Virginians to vote with their phones since the 2018 election. This pilot has been criticized for the potential security risks it could pose to the outcome of the election. The state authorities suspended the use of this pilot due to security concerns for 2020.
The platform was still used for a mock election to test the system and gauge the reactions of citizens using the app while voting. Recent results from the pilot were deemed favorable by the city clerk.
Voatz also participated in elections in Venezuela. It was used in order to hold an informal referendum against Nicolas Maduro (the president of Venezuela), with many people using the application for 2020.
