Sony will Take Metaverse seriously

To attract users into their ecosystems, entertainment and gaming companies are trying to include metaverse experiences. Sony is a major company in entertainment and gaming. It has expressed its desire to offer more metaverse-inspired experiences for customers.

The Sony Chief Executive Kenichiro Yoshida said this at an annual strategy conference held this week:

Metaverse can be described as a space that is both social and live, where music, games and movies intersect.

Sony’s prior investments in other companies include Epic Games, the makers of popular online franchise Fortnite, and Bungee, creators of the Destiny series, and are part of this new focus. According to numbers presented by the company, more than 50% of the revenue in the last fiscal year came from Sony’s entertainment division, which encompasses gaming, movies, and music-related services.

Other Metaverse Players vs. Playstation

Sony plans to make its Playstation brands a leader in metaverse. Sony Playstation is one of the most popular gaming consoles worldwide, and it could be used to push the metaverse. In this sense, the company stated it “intends to leverage the unique strengths provided by its diverse businesses and expertise in game technology… creating new entertainment experiences in the area of the metaverse.”

The company has been playing catch up with Meta and others in this field, such as Meta which produces hardware for metaverse immersion experiences. Meta is the exclusive owner of Oculus VR headsets. Horizon Worlds is its metaverse flagship app.

Microsoft isn’t the only company aiming to become a metaverse leader. It acquired Activision for nearly $69 billion dollars and created Mesh, its corporate metaverse.

Sony already demonstrated its VR2 headsets that can be used in conjunction with its PS5 consoles. It was expected that the headset would be released this year. However, supply chain problems could cause it to delay until 2023.
