Metaverse vs. Multiverse vs Omniverse

As one searches the online space, the term “metaverse” is becoming increasingly common and one has certainly seen a spotlight on this ecosystem. While many are struggling to grasp this new paradigm, it hasn’t stopped early adopters engaging with the projects. They have seen various metaverse initiatives take off and draw investor attention.

Whilst the technology for creating a metaverse is new, the concept was first described by Neal Stephenson in his science fiction novel ‘Snow Crash’ published in 1992. While the metaverse concept is based on cosmological concepts it has become synonymous with the virtual realm. The virtual world is made up of many interconnected, user-generated worlds. These are all accessible via a single interface.

But, it is possible that the birth of metaverse could just be the first. Virtual space will evolve from Metaverse into Multiverse, and then eventually Omniverse.

Cosmology inspires me

Cosmology students will find it easier to comprehend the concepts Metaverse, Multiverse and Omniverse. These terms were inspired by Cosmology.

Metaverse will be analogous to our universe, but it is in digital space. This digital space, however, will offer a more immersive experience than our digital ones. As the universe is the sum of all existence; space-time and all its contents, Metaverse will be the sum of all of an individual’s and a community’s digital existence.

Multiverses are a group of many observable universes. Multiverses share the same laws of physics and elementary particles as their parent universe. The universes within the multiverse can be called “alternate universes,” “parallel universes,” or “many worlds.” Expanding this hypothesis to the digital sphere, a multiverse will be a collection of numerous metaverses. These universes can have similar programming languages and interoperable. They also share some assets and avatars with other metaverses.

The Omniverse refers to a superset or combination of all universes and multiverses that have ever existed. Latin for Omni, it means all things. Omniverse simply means the last existence. Even though digitally, we may not be able to create this space but we know that any attempt at interoperability will lead us towards Omniverse.

Metaverse in digital Cosmology is at the bottom level. One can have a Facebook Metaverse or a Google Metaverse. Partnering with users and creating a Multiverse can result in groups of metaverses. To do so, a set of common standards, frameworks and interoperability requirements will be required to ensure secure sharing of data and content.

The highest level is Omniverse, which basically becomes an umbrella term for all Metaverses or Multiverses that exist and will also exist in the future.

The creator economy in an Omniverse powered by power

Developers will need to establish a common set of standards for sharing content between multiverses if they are moving towards the Omniverse. A creator economy that is accessible to everyone will be a key requirement for standardization. Although the influencer and creator economy have grown tremendously over the last decade, they still lack a solid platform to legitimize their fans and consolidate them.
