Hacker says he has stolen personal information of one billion Chinese citizens from Shanghai National Police (SHGA). He is now selling the data for 10 bitcoins. “This database contains many TB of data and information on billions of Chinese citizens.”

23 Terabytes on Data about a Billion Chinese Citizens for Sale at Ten Bitcoins

Unidentified hacker claims to have stolen data from a Shanghai police directory containing 23 terabytes about one billion Chinese citizens. This would, experts say, be the largest data breach in history if it is true.

This data can be purchased for just 10 bitcoins. The sum totals to $197 806 at the time this article was written.

On a hacker forum, an anonymous user using the handle “Chinadan” offered the data for sale on Thursday. User claimed the information had been stolen from Shanghai National Police (SHGA). “This database contains many TB of data and information on billions of Chinese citizens,” the post details.

Leaked data include names, addresses and birthplaces as well as national ID numbers, mobile numbers, crime details, and other case information.

To verify the authenticity of data being sold, the user provided a sample of 750,000 records.

Zhao Changpeng (CZ), Binance CEO, tweeted this Monday:

One billion records were found by our threat intelligence to be available for sale on the dark internet. They included name, address and mobile numbers, as well as medical records that are from an asian nation.

“Likely due to a bug in an Elastic Search deployment by a gov agency … It is important for all platforms to enhance their security measures in this area,” he continued, adding that “Binance has already stepped up verifications for users potentially affected.”

The Binance chief further explained Monday: “Apparently, this exploit happened because the gov developer wrote a tech blog on CSDN [China’s Software Developer Network]Inadvertently, the credentials were included. 1 billion records of private citizens’ data.”
