It would require that Argentinian citizens pay taxes on certain assets, such as cryptocurrencies, held abroad.
Argentinian Law Project: Tax Foreign Properties
A new bill proposal was presented to the Argentinan senate. It proposes a method of repaying the $44 billion in debt the country has with International Monetary Fund. The law, called “National Fund For The Cancellation Of The Debt With The IMF,” implements a system that, if approved, will tax several key elements that Argentinians possess in foreign lands.
All types of properties located outside the country will be subject to tax, such as any amounts of fiat currencies or stocks, bonds, credits and cryptocurrencies. These undeclared goods would also be included in the emergency input. All taxes paid will be made in U.S. Dollars and deposited into the accounts of the Argentinian fiscal authority (AFIP).
Strategies and percentages
Depending upon the manner and duration in which the property or cryptocurrency is declared to the tax authority, Argentinian residents will be required to contribute a portion of these funds. In the law proposal, article nine states that:
Article 6 expresses that taxpayers will pay the contribution that is based on applying the twenty percent (20%) rate to all assets.
The rate is applicable to taxpayers that declare the assets voluntary within six months of approval of law. This period is over, and the law applies a 35% rate on goods, stocks, cryptocurrency, which are held in foreign countries. This rate could rise as high as 50% depending on the circumstances.
Penalties for failing to comply with duties set forth in the law include fines and prison time. The project also defines the role of the collaborator to identify possible criminals with sufficient evidence. A portion of tax authorities’ funds is collected from collaborators. This can range up to 30%, depending on the severity of the case.
