Hackers Used Deepfake of Binance CCO to Perform Exchange Listing Scams – Exchanges Bitcoin News

In series of video conferences with various representatives of cryptocurrency projects, hackers were able to create the appearance of Patrick Hillmann, Binance’s chief communications officer. Hillman claimed that they used an AI Hologram (a deepfake his image) to impersonate Hillmann. They were able fool several representatives of the projects and made them believe Hillmann was helping them list on the exchange.

Patrick Hillmann, Binance’s Chief Commercial Officer, is impersonated by third parties

Hackers and fraudsters are constantly improving their strategies by using more advanced technology in their scams. Patrick Hillmann (CCO Binance) reported last week on a sophisticated and new way that attackers used Hillmann’s image for a listing fraud operation.

Hillmann claimed that hackers had programmed an AI (artificial Intelligence) hologram of Hillmann, which was used as a deepfake to deceive representatives from several cryptocurrency projects through Zoom calls. These projects were fooled by the hologram and believed that Hillmann was involved in an operation to list them on Binance.

Hillmann received a thank you from these individuals for helping them to discover the listing scheme. Hillmann was unaware of these meetings, as he isn’t involved in the Binance listing process.

Hillmann failed to disclose which cryptocurrency projects were targeted and the amount of funds that were invested in order for them to be listed.

CCO Binance also warned about an increase in impersonation scams on social media sites all across the web. Hillmann said:

Beyond this latest incident, there’s been a recent spike in hackers pretending to be Binance employees and executives on platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram, etc. We’re ready to protect our ecosystem and users.

Binance’s listing process does not include third parties, Hillmann clarified, and project listing proposals are only received via a direct listing application page. In a blog post last year Binance stated that they do not charge fixed fees for projects. Binance gives the following explanation about the cost of the listing fees:

There is no one number that will work. Simply suggest a number that is comfortable for you. Your willingness to help others is a sign of your commitment to making a positive difference.

Binance Charity is a charity that uses blockchain technology to track the funds raised by the exchange. Scammers involving listing seem to be increasing in frequency. Bluebenx was a Brazilian cryptocurrency investment platform.
