Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla’s upcoming futuristic diner and drive-in theater, planned for the Hollywood area, will accept the meme cryptocurrency dogecoin. Some merchandise can be purchased on the website of the electric car maker, which currently accepts DOGE.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk: ‘You Can Pay in Doge’
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Spacex, tweeted Friday about accepting future dogecoin payments in response to Ryan Zohoury’s tweet that a Tesla Supercharger Station in Santa Monica was almost fully charged 10 minutes after opening.
The Tesla boss tweeted, “And futuristic diner / drive-in theater planned for Hollywood area.” He added in a follow-up tweet:
You can also pay in Doge.
The Tesla CEO did not clarify what customers could pay with the meme cryptocurrency at press time. Some people assume that Tesla supercharger stations will accept dogecoin while others interpreted Musk’s tweet as applicable to only the upcoming diner and drive-in theater in the Hollywood area.
Nonetheless, Dogecoin’s supporters welcome Musk’s plan to further the adoption of the meme cryptocurrency.
However, this news does not seem to have any effect on dogecoin’s price. At the time of Musk’s tweet, DOGE was trading at $0.1417 based on data from Bitcoin.com Markets. The price rose slightly, to $0.1450. However, at the time it was written it dropped to $0.1411.
Tesla started accepting DOGEcoin as a payment for certain merchandise in January. Musk then tried to get McDonald’s to accept DOGE by offering to eat a Happy Meal on television. However, the famous fast-food chain replied, “only if Tesla accepts grimacecoin.”
Musk is a loyal dogecoin fan and is often called the Dogefather in crypto circles. The Tesla boss believes that DOGE is the people’s crypto and previously revealed that many people he talked to at Tesla and Spacex owned dogecoin. According to him, dogecoin was the best cryptocurrency for transaction transactions and bitcoin more suitable for store-of-value.
