Elon Musk, a tech entrepreneur has declared that Starlink satellite internet has been made available to Ukraine. This is in response to the request of Kyiv’s government to stop a Russian military attack that could disrupt communications among other threats.
Elon Musk Offers Starlink Access for Ukrainians
Elon Musk, a crypto-influencer and billionaire from the United States, announced on social media that Starlink was activated for Ukraine. Spacex is the satellite internet provider and aerospace manufacturer Spacex. Musk founded Spacex and manages it.
He also posted that his company was sending the equipment necessary to the Ukrainians. Starlink’s low-orbit satellites provide high-speed broadband internet across the globe but access to the network requires the installation of a special antenna and modem.
Earlier on Saturday, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov took to Twitter to address Musk directly:
Following President Putin’s order, Russia launched a military assault on Ukraine on Feb. 24. Russian forces have advanced on major Ukrainian cities since that time. Authorities, citizens and members of the crypto community fear the country’s communications with the world may be affected.Internet monitor Netblocks has registered “a series of significant disruptions to internet service” since the beginning of the Russian military operations in the country, AFP reported. Starlink has more than 2000 satellites. However, initially it wasn’t clear if Ukrainians could use the service.
“Starlink terminals are coming to Ukraine! Thank you @elonmusk, thank you everyone, who supported Ukraine!” Fedorov tweeted following Musk’s reaction. The government official also expressed his gratitude to Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova for the “swift decisions related to authorization and certification that allowed us to activate the Starlink.”
Ukraine was close to regulating digital assets before the Russian military offensive began. The country has sought help in crypto donation form for its defense. One of the largest NGOs involved in supporting the country’s military, Come Back Alive, has already received millions of dollars in bitcoin.
