Elon Musk (CEO of Spacex and Tesla) stated that Tesla employees cannot work remotely in May. Qatalog, GitLab and other sources show that remote workers often spend more time each week trying to prove their online status and work for their employer. However, metaverse work environments are a futureistic way to do remote work. Workers have concerns about how their bosses will monitor them.
Elon Musk’s Dislike for Remote Work, ‘Digital Presenteeism’ Seen as Problem
Elon Musk is the CEO of Spacex and Tesla. He doesn’t like remote work. In a leaked memo directed to workers of Tesla, Musk stated that remote work wasn’t acceptable anymore, telling them they had to spend 40+ hours in the facilities of the company weekly or they will be fired. Musk even criticized other companies that allow remote work, saying they had not shipped an amazing product for “a while.”
New data indicates that Musk’s concerns are not unfounded. According to a study completed by Qatalog and GitLab, “digital presenteeism” is becoming a problem. The concept refers to a group of actions that remote workers perform — in addition to their normal work — to show their superiors and colleagues they are indeed working during the day. This study revealed that remote workers spent 67 minutes performing such tasks every day. That’s more than 5.5 hours of work per week.
Metaverse-based remote work is a new way to do work remotely. However, it also has its challenges.
Workers Fear that they will be monitored in the Metaverse
Companies are exploring the possibility of bringing remote workers into a metaverse workplace, in light of new technologies like the metaverse. Expressvpn published a survey that found this strategy has some downsides.
Surveying 1,500 employees and 1,500 businesses in the U.S. found 63% were concerned that their employers could collect their personal data in the metaverse. Similar concerns surround surveillance. 51% of respondents were concerned about the possibility that their employer could collect real-time data about where they are located, while 50% worry about monitoring what is happening on screen.
These workers are more worried about the issues than those who work for companies that have more than 500 employees. There have also been other experiments regarding remote working using metaverse technology. Researchers from Coburg University, Cambridge University, Primorska University, and Microsoft Research found that metaverse tech was not yet ready for remote work.
