El Salvador, the country which made bitcoin legal tender, has purchased 21 more bitcoins to celebrate “the last 21st day of the year 21 of the 21st century,” President Nayib Bukele announced. This country total has approximately 1,391 Bitcoins.
El Salvador Buys More Bitcoins
El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele announced Tuesday that his country has bought more bitcoin.
His announcement began with a tweet that reads: “El Salvador’s entire size is 21,000 km2. Coincidence? I don’t think so!” He followed up with a series of tweets that collectively read:
This is the 21st of 21st Century. At 21:00 hours … We are buying 21 bitcoin for the occasion. I’m holding the purchase till 21:21:21.
Then he posted an image showing a list with BTC transactions totaling approximately 21 bitcoins. “Got a receipt,” he wrote.
Since September, when bitcoin became legal tender in El Salvador alongside the U.S. dollars, El Salvador has been accumulating bitcoins. The latest transaction saw El Salvador purchase 1,391 bitcoins.
El Salvador purchased 400 BTC before the law was implemented. The country purchased 300 additional bitcoins. At the time, President Bukele declared that El Salvador had 700 bitcoins.
In October, the nation bought 420 BTC. The country also bought 100 bitcoins in November. In December, the country made a large transaction for 150 BTC. This brought total bitcoin purchases up to 1,370 BTC. The total amount of purchases now stands at 1,391 BTC, including 21 BTC purchased on Tuesday.
El Salvador was warned by the International Monetary Fund to not use bitcoin as legal tender. The warning came one day after President Bukele announced his plan to build a “Bitcoin City” powered by a volcano and financed by bitcoin bonds.
