FC Barcelona is a Spanish soccer team with large fans in Europe and Spain. It has now revealed that it plans to profit from the growth of NFTs and metaverse in cryptocurrency markets. Joan Laporta (president of the club) explained how the club intends to take over all markets in order to increase fan engagement.
FC Barcelona explores growth options
FC Barcelona is one of Europe’s most prominent soccer clubs and has now announced that it will expand into new areas, including metaverse and NFTs. The expansion’s objective is increasing the engagement of the club through the use of these new technologies. Joan Laporta was the president of the club. She stated:
There has been much attention paid to the blockchain in recent years. Our members and fans should have the option to purchase digital products that align with club values. This will create a unique emotional experience.
Laporta stated that club members were working to start their first NFT drops soon. However, he did not provide any further details.
Expanding through Technology
FC Barcelona is already considering the use of new technology to engage fans and generate income. The club has more than 120 year of history. Laporta hinted that the club could launch a cryptocurrency instead of its fan token, which was issued in partnership by Socios.
Barca Studios is the club’s new production center. It will also host the Barca Innovation hub, which introduces new technology into the team’s workflow.
Laporta said that the club was focused on growing to provide new services and products linked with new technology in order to remain relevant. According to the president,
We are looking for new ways to grow. While our goal is to win titles, and make fans happy; we have to also be able profit from the potential opportunities within the sports industry. This is about survival.
In August, a report stated that the Socios fan token fever has helped major clubs across Europe earn $200 million. This is despite clubs seeing it as a more profitable business.
