Crocs is an American shoe manufacturer based out of Colorado. According to a trademark application, Crocs may have entered the realm of non-fungible tokens. Crocs’s foam clog shoe sales have surpassed 300 million since 2004, and this application describes how a protocol can be used to store and manage digital collectibles.
Crocs Trademark Filing Describes ‘Downloadable Virtual Goods Created With Blockchain Technology, Smart Contracts, in the Nature of Footwear’
According to a United States Patent and Trademark Office report, Crocs is keeping an eye on non-fungible tokens (NFT). Crocs is well-known for its injection-molded foam products. In 2004, Crocs was granted the exclusive rights of Croslite, the company’s proprietary foam product.
According to the USPTO, this product is completely different than foam clogs. The “registration is intended to cover the categories of downloadable digital media namely, digital assets, digital collectibles, digital tokens, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs),” the Crocs trademark filing notes. It further continues by mentioning things like leveraging blockchain tech and smart contracts in order to showcase Crocs’ products. Further information is included in the filing:
[The registration is intended to cover]Digital goods, including footwear, apparel, bags, accessories and charms that can be downloaded, are made with the blockchain-based technology.
In terms of sales, Crocs are not as popular as they once were during the first few years they were introduced and in 2010, TIME magazine added Crocs to the world’s “50 Worst Inventions.” Crocs, however, are still worn by celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian, and Justin Bieber. While the trademark indicates an interest in securing the rights to NFT-based Crocs’ intellectual property (IP), the company has not mentioned anything about leveraging NFTs in recent times.
A number of internationally recognized brands have also been embracing NFTs. There are many well-known brands like Adidas, Budweiser and Hennessy.
