There is a specific kind of frustration in hearing the air conditioner running while the house gets warmer.

It is also one of the most common service calls, and a meaningful share of them turn out to be something the homeowner could have found in ten minutes. That is not a criticism of homeowners. Nobody is taught this, and the useful checks are not obvious.

Here is the order worth working through, and the point at which it stops being a homeowner job.

First, Establish What Is Actually Happening

“Not cooling” covers several different faults, and separating them narrows the problem immediately.

  • Air is blowing, but it is not cold. The blower works. The problem is in the cooling side.
  • No air is coming out of the vents at all. The blower is the problem, or something upstream of it.
  • Some rooms are cold and others are not. That is usually distribution, not equipment.
  • It cools, but never reaches the setpoint. Often capacity or airflow rather than an outright failure.
  • The outdoor unit is silent. Power, contactor, or capacitor.

Go outside and check whether the outdoor unit is running. Put your hand near the top of it. A working system pushes noticeably warm air upward, because a condenser coil transfers heat outdoors. If the outdoor fan is still and the indoor blower is running, you have already halved the problem.

The Four Checks Worth Doing First

These are safe, fast, and between them account for a large share of no-cool calls.

1. The air filter. A loaded filter starves the system of airflow. Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If light does not pass through it easily, it is restricting the system. Filters load faster than people expect during heavy runtime.

2. The thermostat settings. Confirm it is set to COOL rather than HEAT or OFF, that the setpoint is genuinely below room temperature, and that the fan is on AUTO rather than ON. Batteries in a battery-powered thermostat are worth ruling out too.

3. The breakers. A central system usually has two: one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser. A breaker can trip on one and not the other, which produces the classic symptom of air blowing but never getting cold. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call. A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job, and forcing it is genuinely dangerous.

4. The outdoor unit itself. Look for anything blocking airflow. Grass clippings, cottonwood, leaves, a trash can pushed against it, a shrub that has grown in over a couple of seasons. The unit needs clear space around it to reject heat.

Why “Auto” Matters More Than People Think

The fan setting “on” runs the blower continuously, even when the system is not actively cooling.

That sounds harmless and it creates a specific complaint. When the compressor stops but the blower keeps running, air continues moving across a wet evaporator coil, and moisture that just condensed out gets re-evaporated back into the house. The result is a home that hits its temperature target and still feels sticky.

In a humid climate this is not a small effect. AUTO runs the blower only while the system is cooling, which lets the condensate actually drain away. Unless there is a specific reason to circulate air continuously, AUTO is the better setting.

The Frozen Coil Problem

If the checks above turn up a filter that was badly loaded, there is a good chance the evaporator coil has frozen. This one has a rule attached to it.

Restricted airflow freezes an evaporator coil. Not enough warm air passes over it, the coil drops below freezing, condensation turns to ice, and the ice then blocks airflow completely. It is a loop that gets worse the longer it runs.

Signs are ice visible on the refrigerant line at the indoor unit, very weak airflow from the vents, and water around the air handler once things start melting.

A frozen coil must be fully thawed before anyone can diagnose the underlying fault. This matters practically: if you call while the system is frozen solid, a technician may arrive and be unable to test anything meaningful.

To thaw it, switch the system to OFF and set the fan to ON. Running the blower without the compressor moves room-temperature air across the coil and speeds it up considerably. Expect a few hours. Put towels down. Do not chip at the ice.

Then replace the filter and restart. If it freezes again, the cause is not the filter, and that is a service call.

That last row is the one to take seriously. A repeatedly tripping breaker is a protective device reporting a real fault.

The Drain Line Nobody Thinks About

An air conditioner produces a surprising volume of water. That condensate leaves through a drain line, and drain lines block with algae and dust over time.

A condensate drain can back up and trigger a safety switch. Many systems have a float switch that shuts the unit down when the pan fills, precisely so the overflow does not end up in a ceiling. When that switch trips, the symptom is a system that simply will not start, with no obvious cause.

Homeowners who spot standing water around the indoor unit sometimes mop it up and carry on. The water is the message. Left alone it becomes drywall damage, which costs considerably more than the drain clearing that would have prevented it.

What Local Conditions Add

Two practical consequences follow. Runtimes are long, which means filters load faster and airflow problems show up sooner than the maintenance schedule on the box suggests. Spring pollen and cottonwood are also a real factor for outdoor coils here. A condenser that looks fine from three feet away can be matted with fine debris between the fins, and a coil that cannot reject heat behaves like a system that is short on capacity.

When to Stop and Call

Some things are not worth attempting.

Anything requiring the electrical panel to be opened, any refrigerant work, a burning smell, a breaker that trips more than once, or ice that returns after a proper thaw and a fresh filter. Refrigerant in particular is not a homeowner item. It requires certification to handle, and a system that is low has a leak that needs finding rather than filling.

When you do call, having the answers ready makes the visit shorter and the diagnosis better.

Anyone who lets you book a service call will ask most of that on the phone anyway, and the answers often determine whether the visit is treated as an emergency or scheduled for the following day.

If the coil is frozen, thaw it completely before anyone comes out, or the visit is wasted. Set the fan to AUTO rather than ON. And treat a repeatedly tripping breaker, any burning smell, or standing water near the air handler as reasons to stop and phone rather than keep going.
