Keanu Redeves discusses Crypto, Metaverses, and NFTs
Keanu Reeves, a well-known Hollywood actor, spoke about cryptocurrency, the metaverse and digital content in an interview last week with The Verge.
Reeves and co-star Carrie-Anne Moss were interviewed about making “The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience,” a playable tech demo built by Epic Games, and what to expect from their upcoming Matrix Resurrections movie. The two stars also discussed how technology is blurring the line between what’s real and virtual.
Reeves discussed the metaverse, Facebook and the recent name change to Meta by the social media giant. “Can we just not have metaverse like be invented by Facebook?” he said, elaborating:
Metaverse concepts are much older than this.
He was also asked: “Do you think it’s dystopian like the way the original Matrix kind of presented all this … kind of dystopian where tech was headed.”
Reeves replied, “Yeah,” adding: “Because it’s also content creation, it’s fine, it’s economic creation, cryptocurrency…”
When he received a question regarding whether he owned cryptocurrency, the Matrix Star didn’t finish his answer. “Are either of you into cryptocurrency personally?” he and Moss were asked. Reeves spoke out about crypto even though Moss didn’t respond.
It was a gift from a friend who bought it for me some time back.
Regarding his cryptocurrency, Reeves was further asked: “But you haven’t done anything with it?” The actor responded: “I haven’t had to.” He was then told what hodling means. “Yeah, I have a little hodl,” he admitted.
Reeves was questioned about non-fungible tokens, and if he’d seen them in Matrix Resurrections. Reeves admitted that he had not, but he wondered if Moss is getting any kind of compensation for their use.
When asked what he thought about the concept of digital scarcity, Reeves laughed and added that they are still “easily reproduced.” You can see the full interview here.
