Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Skeptical About Metaverse, Criticizes Play-to-Earn Models – Metaverse Bitcoin News

Phil Spencer, the Xbox brand’s head, thinks that the metaverse is with us from 30 years ago. This was before digital gaming became mainstream. Spencer, however, criticised play-to earn (P2E), stating that these models create a workforce from a type of player who must monetize their time playing.

Phil Spencer from Xbox believes that the Metaverse is Real and has Been Around for a While

There has been much debate about the metaverse, and current concepts of it. Phil Spencer, the Xbox brand’s current chief and Microsoft’s CEO of gaming, expressed doubts over how the metaverse is presented. According to Spencer, the metaverse is not new. It is a continuation of what gamers have been doing for a while. He explained:

Metaverse has been around for thirty years according to my view. When you’re playing games, these 3D shared worlds that people have been playing in for years and years, I think what we’ve found is that there’s more connection because we have a shared purpose.

Spencer explained that gamers could be confused about the notion of the metaverse, as having an avatar and participating in virtual worlds where voice communications are available is considered to be inhabiting them.

Spencer might not be convinced about the metaverse but Microsoft and Xbox have both used it frequently at various times. In January, when announcing the purchase of Activision Blizzard for almost $69 billion, Microsoft stated it would “accelerate the growth in Microsoft’s gaming business across mobile, PC, console and cloud and will provide building blocks for the metaverse.”

Play-to-Earn Criticism

Spencer is more cautious about the new trend than other companies within the industry. The Xbox boss criticised the goal of the play-to earnn game, declaring:

Play-to-earn specifically is something I’m cautious about. You create a team of players that can be used to monetize certain players. I think sometimes it’s a hammer looking for a nail when these technologies come up.

However, Spencer believes that there might be “interesting things” in the future use of such technologies. This technology is still not available on consoles such as the Xbox and the Sony Playstation 5, but has gained some popularity through blockchain games, like Axie Infinity.
