An earlier study has shown that remote workers may feel more anxious and frustrated working in the virtual world. The study found that 11% felt such discomfort they couldn’t complete the entire study in a single day, which left their tasks unfinished.
Meta needs upgrades to support remote work
Individuals and companies are betting on the role of the metaverse, which is a digital version of the world that allows people to work remotely. A recent study by Microsoft Research and researchers at Coburg University, Cambridge University, Primorska University, and the University of Cambridge paints an entirely different picture.
The report, titled “Quantifying the Effects of Working in VR for One Week,” compared the performance of 16 different workers developing their tasks in a normal environment and in a common metaverse setup during a 40-hour work week. The results were mostly negative, hinting at the possibility that today’s metaverse could still be too limited to support work-based applications.
The study found that people who used the metaverse system reported experiencing more frustration (42%, 11%, and nearly 50% more eye strain than their usual work environment. The study also revealed that subjects felt less productive.
Due to a variety of factors, including the VR setup’s migraines, and the lack of comfort, 11 percent of participants could not complete any of the work experiments.
Remote Work Links
While metaverse tech has been used in entertainment and gaming technologies, remote working is a potential future application of this technology. According to a survey conducted by Globant an Argentinian company that specializes in software, 69% said that metaverse will play a significant role in this application.
However, the results of the study show that today’s tech will make that task difficult. However, not everything is bad: The study found that the participants could overcome limitations in metaverse technology and initial discomfort. In fact, the research team called for further investigation into the possible effects of long-term productive VR work.
