For years, crypto and blockchain enthusiasts have preached the importance of mass adoption. This goal has been made difficult by many factors, including ignorance, lack of information and poor telecommunication infrastructure.
A Book of ‘Immeasurable’ Importance
In Africa, where proponents of cryptocurrencies believe the technology has a better chance of succeeding, the task of convincing the continent’s citizens is made even more difficult by scammers. Scammers continue to make it difficult for people to lose their money in crypto-scams, which is a setback to adoption efforts.
Gurvykavei, a Namibian author and educator decided to create a book about his learnings in order to overcome these challenges. Kavei, who is also a tutor at the University of Namibia, told Bitcoin.com News that he expects the book to help practitioners, policymakers, as well as educators like himself, become acquainted with the technology’s basics.
Kavei also shared the reasons why he published the book. He wrote responses to Bitcoin.com News explaining why education is so important. Below are Kavei’s responses to questions sent to him via Whatsapp.
Bitcoin.com News (BCN: Why did you choose to publish this book?)
Gurvykavei (GK).My profession is education. Given the very low adoption of cryptocurrency and blockchain in Africa, Namibia and other African countries, we have a responsibility to help future generations and promote digital economies. It is our duty to support those in the blockchain/crypto space. Neo-economics does not focus on monopoly wealth accumulation, but rather shared prosperity. To share both the wealth and knowledge, I wrote this book.
BCN: What is the importance of this book and any other books that aim to increase public awareness about Bitcoin and Blockchain?
GK:It is a book of immense importance. The book contains nearly 360 pages of information about the whole crypto eco-system. The book explains the implications of blockchain technology and the extent to which it is part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It also dives deep into the world of crypto trading and mining. Third and most importantly, the book discusses the regulatory and geographical permutations as well as fintech enablers. These enable entrepreneurs and practitioners to take control of the digital economy. This book is useful for policymakers, educators and practitioners.
BCN: What do you think about the interest level in crypto currencies in Namibia?
GK:This level of interest has been increasing and is almost universal. In cryptospace five years ago, there were only a handful of high-level multi-level marketing Bitcoin miners. Even though most of these, like Crowd1, Mining City or Bitclub Network, have been plagued by structural issues, crypto entrepreneurship continues to thrive with new entrants joining the crypto eco in different ways.
Crypto trading, which is a growing niche for young entrepreneurs, offers a way to solve the problem of out-of control (30%) unemployment as well as a means to improve their livelihood. Digital Wealth Economy of Namibia also runs Crypto Automated Machines, which allow you to buy and sell crypto in Windhoek.
The trend is expanding in both size and scope with each passing day. With more education in Web3 AI and other coding techniques, many young people have developed new ideas in fintech. There are many other Blockchain-derived solutions. I have developed blockchain solutions with other Blockchain enthusiasts for both public and private companies to solve many issues, including property and land registrations and Identity Management. On the academic and research front, my new book and others slated for the future are indications of how Namibia’s interest in crypto is changing.
The Bank of Namibia officially stated its interest in exploring the possibility of creating a Central Bank Digital Currency. The University of Namibia has been compelled by all these factors to offer academic programs in Blockchain technology.
BCN: Can you give us some preliminary feedback or results about your book’s launch since then?
GK:There have been new opportunities since launch. First of all, individuals have begun to place orders. Three higher education institutions are considering using the book to train on blockchain technology. This includes the University of Namibia as well the Digital Wealth Academy. Other institutions are also in development.
While international book distributors such as Grin Verlag and Lehmanns Media are increasing in sales, efforts have been made to obtain local distribution rights for Namibia and other African countries, where crypto/blockchain education needs are growing quickly. Since the publication of the book, two projects focusing on blockchain solutions for insurance and property registration in Namibia have been in full swing. It is clear that this is only the beginning. More will come.
