One of the world’s most important international organizations, the World Economic Forum (WEF), has voiced concerns about the safety and well-being of young metaverse dwellers. It has made several recommendations regarding how to protect young people in the upcoming alternate world.
World Economic Forum Places Metaverse Child Safety First
There are many institutions and large forums in the world that think about what it might mean to live a small part of our lives on the other side. The World Economic Forum (WEF), an “international institution for public private cooperation,” has expressed its worries about the safety of young individuals in the metaverse. Mark Read, WPP CEO, discusses the rise of this industry and the importance of creating a safe, secure metaverse in an article he wrote as part of Davos 2022.
It is stated that the metaverse, while being promoted as an alternate universe for everyone, will draw the greatest attention due to its features. Gaming applications will therefore be the most popular, which will mean that children will have the opportunity to experience these new experiences first. It explains this in the following way:
Children are in front of more games across more devices for longer – partly because of the pandemic. Wide-ranging behavior is being observed (including abuse) if children aren’t monitored. Monitorization is now more challenging.
How to make the Metaverse Safe
Additionally, the Institution made recommendations on ways to make the future of metaverse safer for young people. Wunderman Thompson found that 72% are concerned about the privacy and safety of their children in the metaverse. 66% also worry.
Some companies are already producing metaverse experiences that are protected and walled for children. This approach is not applicable in multi-connected metaverses. The article notes that “we must learn how to design better algorithms and business models, and intervene well.” It explains:
The mix should include the ability to predict new behaviors. We are seeing new behaviors and experiences in the metaverse, which allows for immersive digital 3D experiences.
Already, companies are creating metaverse experiences to entertain children. Epic Games, Lego, and other companies announced their partnership in April to develop a common metaverse for children. This will allow them to have fun building their experiences. Epic Games also owns Superawesome which helps children keep these experiences safe.
