Telegram’s New Premium Tier to Expand User Functionality
Telegram, a messaging app that is very popular in cryptocurrency circles has just announced that it would introduce a paid premium service that will enable its users to use new features, and extend on those that already exist. Telegram is trying to maximize its user base, reaching 700 million users monthly.
According to Pavel Durov, CEO of the premium tier, it is a solution to users who want to increase their storage and bandwidth from the app. He explained:
It was after some reflection that we realized the best way to satisfy our most demanding users while still maintaining our current features is to offer those extra limits as a premium option.
Among the new features available for paid users are the extension of the number of channels that they can follow — 1,000, up from the 500 that the free tier offers — and also the creation of 20 chat folders with 200 chats in each folder. Techcrunch has estimated that this service tier would cost close to six dollars.
Road to Monetization
Telegram isn’t the only company trying to monetize its services. The platform provides content management and messaging systems for thousands of companies and individuals worldwide. Advertisers can now place sponsored messages in channels with over 1,000 subscribers.
However, the biggest attempt at monetization was the launch of Telegram’s own token, called gram. The company was able to raise more than $1 million from international investors but the initiative was shut down in 2019 by the U.S. SEC. They issued a temporary restraining orders against it. Telegram decided to cease the token launch, return all the funds to investors and pay a fine.
