Two NFT projects appeared in the middle of all the excitement surrounding Bored Ape Yacht Club’s (BAYC), non-fungible token NFT (NFT) collectibles. They offered near identical or mirror versions of original BAYC NFTs. Opensea removed NFT products from its market due to copyright violations.
2 Copycat Bored Ape Yacht Club Projects Cause a Stir
NFT-lovers have discussed two NFT project copies, PHAYC or Phunky Ape Yacht Club (PAYC) recently. Both projects introducedThese were copycats of Bored Ape Yacht Club’s NFTs, which had been slightly modified or mirrored.
The phony BAYCs are actually facing left rather than right and have the exact same avatars that the original BAYCs. PAYC paid homage, in part, to Cryptopunks who had similar-styled copies of their Cryptopunks NFT collection when they revealed their concept.
“Once upon a time, the Cryptophunks waged war against the tyranny of DMCA,” the PAYC creators wrote on December 6. “We are joining the battle. It’s time to get phunky. We are launching 10,000 hand-coded and phlipped NFTs.”
Tracy Wang (Coindesk) covered the other project, PHAYC on December 30. Wang detailed that the PHAYC project “launched Tuesday evening as a free mint to the first 8,500 claimers and generated about 60 ETH from the remaining 1,496 sales.”
Battle Over Which Phony BAYC Project Is First
PHAYC as well as PAYC were arguing on Twitter over which project was the best copycat to the successful BAYC NFTs. “I have just been informed that there is a copycat PHAYC that launched after us. Anybody else hear of this blasphemy?” the PAYC project tweeted on December 29. A person responded. said:
My guess is that the one with an independent market will be the winner. The history books will be written by the winners. Good luck!
After the demand for Cryptopunks’ (CP) NFTs by Bored Ape Yacht Clubs (BAYC), in 2021, a variety of copiedcat ideas were developed. None of these were close-identical copies, but they were all mirrors of the originals.
Yuga Labs (the creators of BAYC) have copiedrighted original BAYC artwork. They could also file a DMCA case and pursue legal action. Both CP and BAYC are the most well-known NFT collections, in terms of their volume. While CP accumulated $2.98 trillion in total volume, the original BAYC NFT collections gathered $1.04 billion.
