According to local media, armed robbers stole a huge crypto mining operation not far away from Moscow. Unidentified perpetrators robbed dozens more video cards during the latest crime involving the theft of currency minting hardware. This has been a rising trend in Russia.
Crypto Farm, Russia: Unknown attackers steal mining equipment
According to Bits.media, thieves raided the crypto mining farm at Kuchino located near Domodedovo (Moscow Oblast), Wednesday. Vkusvill owned the warehouse where the mining facility was found.
Employees of the security firm responsible for the compound claim that four men wearing masks entered the warehouse and threatened guards with guns before being handcuffed.
The attackers then took four containers that contained around 100 GPUs (graphics processing units) as well as other hardware needed to extract digital currencies. Authorities have determined that the equipment was worth around 1 million rubles or $18,000 at the time.
In an attempt to conceal their tracks, the perpetrators also stole storage devices that contained video recorded from the surveillance cameras. Russian police now want to catch the thieves. They could spend up to 12 years prison for being caught.
The theft of coins minting equipment in Russia is yet another example after operators of Irkutsk’s mining hotel disappeared in June. The robbers stole approximately $1.9 million worth of mining rigs from their clients. These incidents have increased in number over recent years due to the increasing popularity of mining.
Bitcoin mining is just one example of crypto-related activity that remains to be fully regulated by the Russian Federation. The cool climate and cheap energy resources in some of the country’s regions are regarded as competitive advantages for the development of the industry.
Russian authorities are taking measures to stop home crypto mining. They have raised electricity rates so that Russians can make their own installations from basements or garages. This phenomenon is causing excessive consumption of electricity and loss of power in areas with high levels subsidy.
