The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a game-show campaign to help investors make informed decisions “in a playful way.” One of the contestants in the game show chose to listen to a celebrity and invest in crypto.

SEC Debuts ‘Game Show-Themed Public Service Campaign’

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy unveiled “a game show-themed public service campaign” last week. Titled “Investomania,” the campaign aims “to help investors make informed investment decisions and avoid fraud.”

A 30-second television spot and interactive quizzes are part of the campaign. The SEC also provided 15 seconds of informational videos about crypto assets, margin calls and guaranteed returns.

This campaign encourages investors research investment options and to obtain information from reliable sources in order to fully understand risks before they invest.

The TV commercial asks contestants to choose a square from a board that offers investment options. You could find celebrity endorsements, stock tips and stocks from your uncle, cryptocurrency to the moon (FOMO), stock tips for meme stocks, tulip bulb, guaranteed returns and timing of the market.

A 15 second video about crypto investing was one of them. The video features a celebrity encouraging investors to follow their lead and invest in crypto assets.

According to the SEC,

Video shows the effects of good and bad choices after contestants make their selections.

“Sometimes investing may look and feel like a game,” the SEC noted. “Our ‘Investomania’ public service campaign uses a game show concept to educate investors in a playful way that investing is not a game and that they should do their due diligence when making investment decisions.”

This was the conclusion of the Securities Watchdog:

Bottom line — don’t play games with your financial future.
