Horacio Larreta is the chief of the government in Buenos Aires. He confirmed that citizens will be able to pay taxes using cryptocurrencies. This is part of a digitization plan that the city has named “Buenos Aires+” that seeks to simplify the relationship the city has with citizens.
Buenos Aires government to introduce cryptocurrency tax payments
The capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires has announced that it will allow citizens of the city to pay certain taxes using cryptocurrencies. According to local media, the announcement was made by Horacio Rodriguez Larreta — head of the Buenos Aires government — on a recent Zoom call. The city plans to digitize the initiative as part of its digitalization push to increase citizens’ access to government documents.
This plan, called “Buenos Aires+,” seeks to “simplify and streamline the link with citizens and the city,” according to Larreta. On the importance of blockchain for this digitization push (that seeks to automate 70% of formalities during its first year of implementation), Diego Fernández, secretary of Innovation and Digital Transformation, stated:
Blockchain technology, I think, will allow the government to be more transparent in its actions and enable citizens to participate in deeper ways.
Similar to the March proposal by Rio de Janeiro’s government, this proposal will also accept cryptocurrency payments for certain types of taxes beginning next year.
Digital Identification Project
The city’s key project is to implement a digital identification system. This will allow citizens to make simpler requests for documents and pay city officials. It is also designed to allow interoperability, which means that different government agencies could interact with the system in their own ways. The system could be used by citizens to automate tedious tasks between different government agencies, allowing them to handle all their work in one place.
Others public organisations could link their systems to the hub and make direct access to data. Fernandez stated that Fernandez supports this idea:
The people will be able to manage their data. Our platform will allow them to see who has requested their information and which sites they have been looking at. These orders will all be done in an open, blockchain-based system.
Fernandez ended by saying that his team plans to make these data administration use case implementations for 2023.
